How Expiration Dates Affect Whether Supplies Are Eligible
Where to find the date on each box, and why “about a year” isn't enough.
Expiration dates are the single biggest factor after “is it sealed?” Here's what Tonya looks at and how to give her the right information.
Expired supplies are not eligible
A box past its printed expiration date cannot be accepted. There are no exceptions for “it was stored well.”
Closer dates mean fewer options
Supplies with plenty of time left are generally easier to consider. As a box gets closer to its date, it may be ineligible or reviewed differently, depending on the product. Tonya will tell you honestly where your boxes stand. She doesn't publish a fixed cutoff because it varies by product.
Where to find the date
- Sensors (Dexcom, Libre, Guardian): on the label panel near the lot number, often beside an hourglass symbol.
- Pods (Omnipod): on the end or side of the box.
- Test strips: on the box and on the vial. Read the box.
- Infusion sets: on the side label beside the MMT or reference number.
Give dates box by box
One shipment can contain boxes with different dates. Instead of “they're all good till next year,” list each one: “4 boxes exp. 2027-08, 2 boxes exp. 2027-03.” It makes the quote more accurate.
What if dates differ at pickup?
Tonya inspects every box in person. If the dates or condition differ from what was described, the offer can change, and you are free to decline. That's why accurate dates up front matter.
